We read and rate and wrangle with Justin Cronin's looooooooooonnnng first book in a trilogy. We both like the book but spend the entire 'cast complaining about its shortcomings. But we LIKE the book; it's hard to explain. Just read it.
ps. We were both wrong: we missed TWO months this year. Shame on us.

- 2 shots vodka (not the good stuff)
- 1/2 shot Midori melon liqueur
- 1/4 Galliano
Shake with ice and strain into martini glass. Top with a spritz of tonic (contains quinine).

Hoping to beat your podcast posting, I lept into this. But you finished and posted too quickly. I'm only about a quarter in, and have decided to take a pass.
Your comments are on target, and I just don't have the patience for a bloated epic (though I'm starting to get curious about George R. R. Martin's).
Yes, literate, thorough characterization (though not what I'd call fascinating or nuanced characters), somewhat suspenseful...but not a world I care to be immersed in for many hundreds of pages.
The multiple-viewpoint blockbuster has to move like a bullet train, I think.
This one, not quite.
I say it's time for another Ligotti, or a similar oddball stylist. Or that Tim Powers book I recommended.
