The Two Mikes

The Two Mikes
Ever wanted to talk with someone about a book you just read? You could just join a book group and talk about it, drink a little, veer off on tangents, work back around to the book again, and finally wrap it up by picking the next book.

But what happens when the book you just read is about about hungry zombies or a haunted house, and your Eat, Pray, Love–reading friends aren’t really into reading it, much less discussing its finer points? That’s what we’re here for. We Two Mikes will be your virtual book group for discussing new and interesting and old and half-forgotten horror books.

If you want to follow along with us, look at the next forbidden book on the table and start reading.

Episode 71 Off Season by Jack Ketchum

The Mikes ponder all the ways "To Serve Man" in Jack Ketchum's classic cookbook / horror novel OFF SEASON. Whether broasted or fricasseed even Julie Child would be schooled by this gruesome, bloody, dark, disturbing romp into unexpurgated ritualistic cannibalism. Yum.

COCKTAIL TIME

Two Fingers

In a tall glass of ice pour:
Two fingers of anejo tequila
Three fingers of tomato juice
Two fingers of Rauchbier (a German smoked beer)

Add some smokey hot sauce and a lime. Stir.  If you have a nice smoked pig's knuckle, garnish freely.

Music: Shake Your Tail Feather

Episode 69, Colson Whitehead's Zone One

The Mikes are as split down the middle like the remnants of a rotting zombie, which you can read all about in Colson Whitehead's  Zone One.  Do the literati have any business invading the sacred territory of the current zombie meme or is it best to be cordoned off and left for those hard-boiled horror writers who know how it is done?

It IS Cocktail Time!

Manhattan Is Burning.

2 shots rye whiskey
1/2 shot red vermouth

Pour in a shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled glass.
Top with Angostura bitters.

Flame an orange by warming over a flame and pinching so the oils catch fire and fall
on to the drink—or not; it takes a little practice.

End Music:  I Love New York by Madge.

Find the secret powers within -- or don't -- in The House of Lost Souls by F. G. Cottam.  The Two Mikes enter this gothic tale of witchcraft, ghosts, madness, and quiet lesbianism and come out with their sanity surprisingly intact.

COCKTAIL TIME !

1 shot good Gin
2 dashes Bitters
Ice cold Champagne

Take a fluted glass, place sugar cube in the bottom and splash with bitters.  Put in the gin and top with the champagne.

Episode 64: 13 Bullets by David Wellington

WARNING: Mea culpa. Mea culpa. Mea maxima culpa. The sound on this podcast is truly a horror. We did not know how much havoc the air conditioner would visit upon us. It was the hottest day of the year when we recorded and now we know. Please drink heartily before listening.

The Two Mike's take a shot at David Wellington's 13 Bullets. Are vampires unnatural if they actually exist in nature? Do we really need another lesbian cop in a horror novel? Is there anything left to be resurrected in the vampire genre? These questions and more will probably not be answered in this noise riddled episode.

There is also some bonus blathering about Ayn Rand novels and Mike invokes his powers of divination and makes a prediction about a Harry Potter reboot.

It IS Cocktail Time.

Coffin Juice

Double Strength Ginger Beer with/or add ginger bits.
2 shots good dark rum.

Get a tall glass loaded with ice, pour in the ginger beer and top off with rum. Garnish with an orange or lemon rind.

Closing music: I Was Born ( A Unicorn) by The Unicorns.

Episode 60 : Boneshaker by Cherie Priest

The Two Mikes are neither shaken or stirred by Cherie Priest's Boneshaker. The guys held out hope for the promise in its premise but in the end they preferred to be yellow-gased and thrown over the wall. Sorry.

It Is Cocktail Time

One shot Rye Whiskey
1/2 shot Galliano

Put in a rocks glass with ice and finish off with orange juice or even pineapple juice.

Episode 49, Peter Straub's Lost, Boy Lost Girl

If you are into screwing ghosts, you'll dig Peter Straub's Lost Boy, Lost Girl. One Mike loves its labyrinthine gestalt and Milwaukee sensibility. The other Mike says it only made him crave Leon's Frozen Custard and Balistrieri's Pizza. They both end with an Ode to Milwaukee.

1 /4 Milwaukee beer like Schlitz, Miller, Pabst, or even Blatz

Episode 46: R. L. Stine's Superstitious

Join the Two Mikes as they lay open R. L. Stine's Superstitious. Walk under ladders, smash mirrors, step on sidewalk cracks, and watch the demons have at it. Stine takes a crack at adult fiction and may need 1,000 lucky rabbit's feet to make it in the horror genre. Ouch. He could learn a few things from J. K. Rowling, more than just having initials as your first name.

IT TRULY IS COCKTAIL TIME!

GREY GOOSE BUMPS

1 Double shot of chilled Grey Goose Vodka ( Yes, it has to be Grey Goose.)

1 Thimble full of Harp Beer ( Yes, a thimble.)

Drop the thimble into the vodka and kick it back. DO NOT SWALLOW THE THIMBLE!

Episode 42: China Mièville's Perdido Street Station

click to listen

The Two Mikes tackle another doorstop of a book. Mike S. loves it all over, while Mike M.'s feelings are, shall we say, more nuanced. An unusually focused discussion of a rather meandering and sprawling book.

Episode 40: Kim Paffenroth's Dying to Live: An Novel of Life among the Undead

click to listen

For our fortieth(!) episode, the Mike's revisit the subgenre that launched this podcast: the zombie novel. This time we select, almost at random, one of Permuted Press's many undead offerings. Unconvinced by the novel's highmindedness, we try to say something nice, but perhaps end up saying nothing at all.

It's Cocktail Time.

big tablespoon of mixed berries (frozen is okay)
shot of simple syrup
fresh mint
2 shots rye

Episode 39: William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist

Episode 38: John Farris's All Heads Turn When the Hunt Goes By

The Mikes tackle an atypical horror novel from the heyday of shiny-title horror novels and are pleasantly surprised by this complex tale of family secrets, colonial angst, and America's original sin. And snakes—squirmy, nasty snakes.

American Snakebite

Episode 37: The Man on the Ceiling by Steve Rasnic Tem and Melanie Tem

What do you see on the ceiling when you wake up in the middle of the night? Is it an angel? Is it death? Is it Uncle Albert having a tea party with Julie Andrews?

Join the Mikes while they read Steve Rasnic Tem and Melanie Tem's The Man on the Ceiling. Mike S. commits all kinds of logical fallacies and Mike M. does not get the conceit of "let's talk about it as if it is horror." But they both agree this genre-busting book is one of devastating beauty. Seriously, go out and read it.

You bet - it is COCKTAIL TIME!

The Man on the Floor Cocktail

2 shots Bacardi 150 proof rum
and Coke over ice. Drop in a lime wedge.

Drink and hug the floor.

End music: Boston -- More Than a Feeling.
-------------------------------
-------------------------------
Post Script from Mike M: I was curious so I wrote to the authors and asked them about the forms they use when setting out to write and here is the reply from Melanie Tem:

Thanks so much Mike! We're pleased that your book group read The Man on the Ceiling and delighted that is touched you.

Your question is a good one. I don't think either of us very often sets out to write a horror story or science fiction, or Western, or crime/detective, or mainstream or literary or magical realism, all of which we also write. We really try to write whatever genre and using whatever techniques will tell the story best.

We both also write poetry ( Steve more than me) and plays ( me more than Steve), and I do some oral storytelling--again, I don't set out to "write a play" or "come up with something to tell orally," and I don't think Steve sets out to "write a poem"; the form is chosen to best tell the story. And we often find ourselves crossing genres ( I guess that's a genre itself now - slipstream), because the story requires it. That happened with The Man on the Ceiling. We're not even entirely sure what form it is-- hence the "a novel(maybe)" our publisher put on the cover.

Episode 34 - Oliver Onions - The Beckoning Fair One

The house is haunted again and the Mikes are going to see if they can get out of it in one piece in Oliver Onions's masterpiece of atmospheric horror The Beckoning Fair One. You may want to leave, be begged to leave, or just decide it is that time of year to quietly pull down the shades and stay in until the snow melts.

Episode 31 - The Nymphos of Rocky Flats by Mario Acevedo

When the heck did vampires get so darn cuddly? The two Mikes ponder that most ancient of questions in Mario Acevedo's The Nympho of Rocky Flats. Is it possible that Count Chocula is the prototype of all modern vampire detectives or is some other cereal to blame? The guys find the book annoying but they talk about it anyway and ponder what it would be like to take a Short Course In Just Being Evil.

If you want to read a good gumshoe vampire story read the Vampire Papers instead!

IT CERTAINLY IS COCKTAIL TIME!

Kundalini Noir

To one Bottle of Pilsner Beer
add five dashes of your favorite Tabasco Sauce.
